Jesus (Jessie) Casida, RN, PhD, CCRN-CSC, APN-C, has won a competitive grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to conduct research on sleep disruption, depression, and impaired cognitive function that afflicts patients with advanced heart failure, and how to improve patient self-care capability and quality of life. Casida is an assistant professor at Wayne State University College of Nursing in Detroit, and one of 15 nurse educators from around the U.S. to receive the three-year $350,000 “Nurse Faculty Scholar” award this year.

Nita Kasan, RN, MS, has been named the new chief nursing officer for The College Network in Indianapolis, an online nursing educational service company. Kasan will serve as a nursing education advocate by applying her years of experience with direct patient care, teaching, nursing administration, and consulting to TCN’s corporate customers and partners.


Cheryl Hoying, RN, PhD, NEA-BC, has been named president-elect of the American Organization of Nurse Executives. Hoying serves as senior vice president of patient services for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Hoying has held this position since 2005. Prior to her role at Cincinnati Children’s, Hoying served as administrator for patient care services at The Ohio State University Medical Center. Under her leadership, both Cincinnati Children’s and Ohio State University hospitals achieved Magnet status. Also newly elected by the AONE membership are Dawn A. Straub, RN, MSN, NEA-BC, The Nebraska (Omaha) Medical Center; Donna Poduska, RN, MS, NE-BC, Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colo.; and Mary Neff, RN, MSA, FACHE, Mercy Hospital Cadillac (Mich.).

The Emergency Nurses Association named Gordon Lee Gillespie, RN, PhD, PHCNS-BC, CEN, CCRN, CPEN, a 2009 inductee to the Academy of Emergency Nursing. Gillespie works at the University of Cincinnati. The AEN fellowship is a prestigious honor recognizing emergency nurses for their contributions to patient care in and out of the ED.

Sigma Theta Tau International announced in October that Mary D. Naylor, RN, PhD, FAAN, will receive The Baxter International Foundation’s 2009 Episteme Award for clinical trials and refinement of the Transitional Care Model, an innovative approach to addressing the needs of high-risk chronically ill elders and their family caregivers. Naylor will be presented with a $15,000 award Nov. 3 during the STTI biennial convention in Indianapolis. Naylor is the director of the New Courtland Center for Transitions and Health at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing.


Catherine M. Mullahy, RN, BS, CRRN, CCM, president of Mullahy & Associates, a healthcare training and consulting firm, has been named a keynote speaker for the upcoming ninth annual Case Management Conference for Healthcare Professionals. The program is Nov. 18 at the Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich. Mullahy’s keynote address is titled “Why You Need to Be Involved Now in Direct-to-Consumer Case Management.” Also, Peg Nelson, MSN, APRN-BC, PCM, a nurse practitioner and director of the pain and palliative care service at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital in Pontiac, Mich., will serve as a conference keynote speaker.
