More than 120 nurses from the Philadelphia Tri-State region took part Sept. 10 and 11 in a symposium to learn more about the cultural diversities of their patients and nursing colleagues. The event, called “Cultural Competence: Beyond Race & Ethnicity,” was the second biannual symposium planned by The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania’s nursing cultural competence committee.

The discussion topics included bloodless medicine; cross-cultural pain management; culture and obstetrical care; gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender healthcare; health literacy; rationale for cultural competence; complementary and alternative medicine; cultural perspectives on death and dying; cultural and linguistic competence; men in nursing; American Indians and healthcare; and the TIENS program.
