Fourteen hospitals from the Philadelphia Tri-State region were honored by the federal government for their success in increasing the number of organs available for transplantation.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recognized 428 U.S. hospitals at the fifth National Learning Congress for the Donation and Transplantation Community of Practice Sept. 30 to Oct. 1 in Grapevine, Texas.

Receiving Silver 1 medals at the event were the following facilities:

Nemours/A.I. duPont Hospital for Children, Wilmington, Del.

Christiana Hospital, Newark, Del.

Cooper University Hospital, Camden, N.J.

Abington (Pa.) Memorial Hospital

Lehigh Valley Health Network, Allentown, Pa.

St. Luke’s Hospital, Bethlehem, Pa.

Crozer-Chester Medical Center, Upland, Pa.

St. Mary Medical Center, Langhorne, Pa.

Albert Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia

Aria Health (Frankford and Torresdale campuses), Philadelphia

Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience, Philadelphia

Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia

University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, Philadelphia

“These hospitals have made incredible progress,” said Mary K. Wakefield, RN, PhD, administrator of HHS’ Health Resources and Services Administration. “Their efforts reflect the heights Americans can reach when they work together toward a common goal.”

Each of the 428 hospitals, according to a HRSA news release, had eight or more eligible organ donors in a 22-month award period ending in April 2009.
