Two new inpatient units devoted entirely to the care of trauma patients opened recently on the second floor of the new Diamond Building at University Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz.

A new, 20-bed ICU for the most critically injured trauma patients, and a new 24-bed “step down” unit for those on the mend, will occupy 33,000 square feet on the second floor of the new building.

UMC’s new ED and trauma center opened on the first floor in June. The six-floor Diamond Building, still under construction, is named for Tucson resident Don Diamond and his family, who donated the seed money for the Diamond Children’s Medical Center.

The fourth, fifth, and sixth floors, which will make up the Diamond Children’s Medical Center, will have staggered openings next spring.

UMC operates the only Level 1 trauma center in southern Arizona and cares for approximately 5,000 patients each year.
