Question:

Dear Donna,

I am an ED nurse with five years of experience. I want to spend more time with my family, but emergency nursing requires long hours, plus weekend and holiday requirements. What do you suggest?

Jennifer

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Jennifer,

One of the great things about nursing is that there is something for everyone in this profession at every time of his/her life and career. Depending on what your interests and preferences are, there are plenty of other things you can do with regular hours (Monday thru Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.).

Your ED background would lend itself well to occupational health. Learn more about this specialty at www.aaohn.org and www.nurse.com/students/CareersInNursing/Specialties/OHN.htm.

There also are multiple opportunities in the insurance industry, including telephone advice nurse and telephone triage, as well as private telephone triage companies. Your background would be advantageous here as well. See additional career profiles at www.nurse.com/students/careersinnursing.html.

These are just a few examples of the virtually endless opportunities available to you. Start getting out to some local nursing professional association meetings and Nursing Spectrum and NurseWeek career fairs in your area (find out more at http://events.nursingspectrum.com/Expo). Networking is a great way to explore options and to find and get a job.

My best wishes,
Donna
