Question:

Dear Donna,

I am an RN in a telemetry unit who wants to leave bedside nursing. I am almost 60 years old. I need work in the medical field that offers a schedule that I can choose. I could go to different hospitals and offer a service, but what kind? I have been searching for a few years now and can’t decide. I was a paralegal in the past. What would be a good job for me?

Carolyn

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Carolyn,

With your paralegal background, you would be a natural in risk management, fraud investigation, and legal nurse consulting. Risk managers work for hospitals, individual healthcare facilities and their corporate offices, and insurance companies. Fraud investigators work for insurance companies and sometimes law offices. LNC’s can be self-employed, work in law offices, or work for insurance companies.

Learn more about these specialties by visiting the Web sites of the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (www.aalnc.org) and American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (www.ashrm.org). If you use the search feature at Nurse.com, you will find past articles related to these specialties with even more information.

Do some informational interviewing (http://news.nurse.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2004404190355) with others already working in these specialties to help you decide on your direction. Read “How to Change Specialties” (http://news.nurse.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2002205010311) and “How to Find Your Forté” (http://news.nurse.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2001105040317).

I discuss these specialties in great detail in my Career Alternatives for Nurses® seminar home study versions available at
www.Nurse.com/ce/DVD1/Career-Alternatives-for-Nurses/ and www.Nurse.com/ce/CD6/Career-Alternatives-for-Nurses-2/

This program also is available in a home study version at http://ce.nurse.com/Professional-Issues. The program will help you to hone in on your unique talents and transferable skills and find what works for you. You also should attend the How to Start Your Own Business or Consulting Practice seminar since business ownership gives you maximum flexibility. You also will find help in deciding where to go from here in “The ULTIMATE Career Guide for Nurses: Practical Advice for Thriving at Every Stage of Your Career” (www.Nurse.com/ce/7250).

You have plenty of opportunity and a great background. Start gathering more information about each specialty as suggested above and move forward.

My best wishes,
Donna
