Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, N.Y., and North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y., ranked the highest on two separate reports issued by the New York State Department of Health.

According to the latest three-year state report with data from 2004-06, LIJ was ranked New York’s best hospital for heart bypass surgery, earning the department’s double-star ranking. LIJ was among only two hospitals that had success rates significantly better than the statewide average from a statistical standpoint. The hospital had a risk-adjusted mortality rate of 1% for coronary artery bypass graft surgery during that three-year period, the lowest in the state.

A separate DOH report on angioplasty released at the same time revealed North Shore University Hospital performed more emergency angioplasty cases than any other program in the state at 1,122 cases from 2004-06 and had outcomes that were significantly better than the statewide average with a mortality rate of 1.83%. Those numbers make North Shore University Hospital the only facility in the state that had a significantly better success rate in emergency cases.
