Question:

Dear Donna,

I would like to train for the OR. How do I find fellowships for experienced RNs? I have been in psychiatry for 10 years. I'm burned out and want a change.

Denise

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Denise,

Before you do anything, I would suggest that you do some informational interviewing (www.dcardillo.com/articles/thescoop.html) with other nurses working in the OR to be sure this is what you want to do. Many nurses jump from one specialty to another without thoroughly investigating each. I even know nurses who have gone through certification/training for a specialty only to discover that they don't like it once they're in it. Read “How to Change Specialties” at http://news.nurse.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2002205010311.

For information about related programs, contact the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (www.aorn.org) — the national office and your state chapter. They can advise you of perioperative training programs and internships in your area.

To explore other areas, start attending Nursing Spectrum and NurseWeek career fairs (http://events.nursingspectrum.com/Expo) and professional association meetings and talking to other nurses about their work. There is a big world of diverse opportunities out there for you. Take a little time to step back and decide where to go from here. Read “How to Find Your Forte” at http://news.nurse.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2001105040317.

Best wishes,
Donna
