An Oregon senator is hoping the creation of a Senate Nursing Caucus will help strengthen nursing and move the profession’s agenda forward.

Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., along with Senators Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, Mike Johanns, R-Neb., and Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., recently announced plans to form the caucus, according to a news release. The group will examine ways to enhance the role nurses play in delivering high-quality healthcare.

Among issues the caucus will address are the nursing shortage, tuition debt and patient safety. Nurses also will have an opportunity to present ideas and share concerns about their profession.

“Nurses are invaluable to the success of our healthcare system and, most of all, to the patients who depend on them,” Merkley said. “My wife Mary spent years working as a nurse, and not a day went by that I didn’t see what an important role she played in her patients’ lives. I look forward to collaborating with my colleagues in the Senate Nursing Caucus to address critical problems like the nursing shortage and to make sure our nurses are in a position to deliver the best care possible.”
