A new leadership program will focus on attempting to retain nurse educators and transition new ones to the faculty role.

The 2011-13 Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International Nurse Faculty Leadership Academy, funded by a $300,000 grant from The Elsevier Foundation, will gear its activity toward supporting recommendations in the 2010 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.” The report noted the need to provide nurses with “greater opportunities to gain leadership skills and put them into practice.”

“The purpose of this academy is to develop the next generation of nurse faculty so that they can lead the development and implementation of innovative nursing education programs,” said Karen H. Morin, RN, DSN, ANEF, STTI president.

“Working closely with a mentor, participants develop essential leadership skills and learn how to incorporate emerging teaching methodologies such as simulation and other technologies into the nursing curriculum. We look forward to working with nurse faculty from institutions around the world.”

Through simulation, students get practical experience in a controlled environment, which results in fewer errors and increased patient safety. Simulation also allows school administrators to adjust faculty-student ratios. The NFLA program will put new faculty members in position to advocate for simulation at their schools.

According to STTI, research shows nurse educators have higher job satisfaction and more promotion opportunities after working with a mentor. The NFLA model includes two face-to-face workshops, online discussion forums and individualized leadership progression plans. It also includes mentor/protege collaboration on an innovative and sustainable education project and the sharing of results through articles, presentations and inclusion in the Virginia Henderson International Nursing Library.

Applications will be accepted beginning April 1. STTI membership is not a requirement for participation. For additional information, contact the Sigma Theta Tau International Leadership Institute at leadership@stti.iupui.edu or visit www.nursingsociety.org.
