Dear Donna,

I’d really like to work from home, so what can I do as a nurse that’s home-based? Or are there any business opportunities that I can try? I will consider either part time or full time.

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Norlita,

There are many things you can pursue depending on your interests and background. Many insurance companies have home-based positions to provide telephone advice, health coaching, case management and more.

Some pharmaceutical companies have home-based positions doing drug safety work and other things.

If you would consider self-employment, you can do health, career or life coaching via telephone from home. You also could do research assistance for schools of nursing or medicine, and write, edit and peer review for nursing or medical publications, websites or newsletters, if you have that skill set.

Start attending nursing and healthcare career fairs in your area and professional association meetings, even if you don’t belong to anything. You never know where the idea, inspiration, spark or opportunity will come from. Check out some area events (www.Nurse.com/CareerFairs). Consider attending an upcoming “Career Alternatives for Nurses” seminar to fully explore options and identify transferable skills. See where I’ll be at www.Nurse.com/CEseminars.

My best wishes,
