ENA releases goals, strategies for next three years

The Emergency Nurses Association has released a three-year strategic plan that charts the organization's path through 2014 with an emphasis on achieving goals in four broad areas.

The plan is available as a PDF at www.ena.org.

Advance Emergency Care at Home and Abroad

Strategies: Develop strategic partnerships; foster relationships that support emergency nursing; expand advocacy opportunities in emergency healthcare policy; explore and provide innovative approaches in the development and delivery of programs, products and services.

General Assembly resolutions: Support the inclusion of ultrasound-guided peripheral venous access within the scope of practice of RNs; collaborate, educate and advocate for the recommendations of the Institute of Medicine's "Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health" report.

Define, Identify and Advocate for a Culture of Safe Practice and Safe Care

Strategies: Develop strategic practice partnerships; recognize, support and promote exemplary emergency nursing practice; proactively identify and address key clinical issues affecting emergency healthcare; recognize, support and promote best practices for emergency nurses.

General Assembly resolutions: Develop position statement regarding association's opposition to paid reservations for ED services; provide resources and education for managing mild to moderately ill children with difficult venous access; convene a work team to recommend guidelines for the care of chronically impaired patients in the ED; maintain database for injury prevention educational programs that are promising and proven.

Champion a Culture of Inquiry, Learning and Collaboration

Strategies: Develop strategic research partnerships; expand emergency nursing management in ENA's culture of inquiry, learning and collaboration; generate, translate, integrate and disseminate research and evidence-based practice; leverage the IOM's "Future of Nursing" initiatives.

General Assembly resolutions: Develop a position statement and an educational program to increase knowledge about the care of patients with stroke symptoms, and collaborate with strategic stroke partners; investigate firearm safety education for children; collaborate with the Internal Association of Forensic Nurses to conduct literature review and educational development for care of forensic patients in the ED.

Expand and Fortify ENA's Membership

Strategies: Develop strategic membership partnerships; increase member loyalty and engagement; provide and promote leadership opportunities; increase and promote the value of membership.

Resolutions: Convene a committee to act as advisors for conference site selection.
