Scottsdale (Ariz.) Healthcare Osborn Medical Center's Level 1 Trauma Center once again has been verified by the American College of Surgeons.
The designation means SHOMC's Trauma Center provides a full spectrum of medical and surgical specialists — orthopedic, neurology, cardiac, thoracic, hand, microvascular, plastic, OB/GYN, ophthalmology, otolaryngology and urology — available around the clock to treat the most critically injured patients.
"Scottsdale Healthcare is better positioned than most hospitals for providing trauma care," said Vicki Bennett, RN, MSN, trauma program manager. "In addition to our highly talented local medical professionals, our Level 1 Trauma Center and Military Trauma Training Program helps increase our ability to respond to domestic disasters as well as preparing soldiers for combat deployment or humanitarian missions."
Level 1 Trauma Centers must be capable of providing total care for every aspect of injury from prevention through rehab. They also must have a major commitment to education, research and planning, including support for surgical residency programs and postgraduate training in trauma for nurses, physicians and first responders.
The Trauma Center serves as a regional disaster response center and military trauma training center, one of the first of its kind in the U.S. Last year, Scottsdale became Arizona's first Magnet-designated multihospital health system. Fewer than 25 U.S. healthcare systems have achieved the designation.
