Meet Patricia Dean, Pediatric nurse practitioner and clinical coordinator, Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at Miami Children's Hospital

The American Epilepsy Society named Patricia Dean, ARNP, MSN, recipient of the J. Kiffin Penry Excellence in Epilepsy Care Award. Dean is an internationally known expert in epilepsy self-management and parent counseling, and a tireless advocate for patients with epilepsy and their families, according to a news release.

The Penry Award recognizes individuals whose work both epitomizes excellence in the care of people with epilepsy, and has a major effect on patient care and improved quality of life for people with the disorder. The 2011 Penry Award was presented in December during the AES 65th annual meeting and scientific conference at the Baltimore Convention Center.

Dean has been involved actively for more than two decades with a recreational camp and support group for children and teens with epilepsy, which she founded. She has served as president of the Epilepsy Foundation of South Florida, as a member of Florida Governor's Task Force on Epilepsy, board director for the Epilepsy Foundation of America and as a member of many ad hoc committees working to advance the care and quality of life for children with epilepsy.
