HealthGrades recognizes Top Hospitals for Emergency Medicine

Twenty healthcare facilities in the Greater Chicago area have been named Top Hospitals for Emergency Medicine by HealthGrades.

The findings were based on the HealthGrades Emergency Medicine in American Hospitals report, which analyzed more than 7 million Medicare patient records from 2008 to 2010 and recognized 263 hospitals nationwide.

The local honorees included the following:

Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, Downers Grove, Ill.

Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, Barrington, Ill.

Advocate Trinity Hospital, Chicago

Alexian Brothers Medical Center, Elk Grove Village, Ill.

Evanston (Ill.) Hospital

Glenbrook Hospital, Glenview, Ill.

Highland Park (Ill.) Hospital

Ingalls Memorial Hospital, Harvey, Ill.

Mercy Hospital & Medical Center, Chicago

Metrosouth Medical Center, Blue Island, Ill.

Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center, Chicago

Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center, Joliet

Resurrection Medical Center, Chicago

Rush University Medical Center, Chicago

Saint Alexius Medical Center, Hoffman Estates, Ill.

Saint Joseph Hospital, Chicago

Saint Catherine Hospital, East Chicago, Ind.

The HealthGrades report analyzed patients admitted to the hospital through the ED for bowel obstruction, COPD, diabetic acidosis and coma, gastrointestinal bleeding, heart attack, heart failure, pancreatitis, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, respiratory failure, sepsis and stroke. The HealthGrades report included only patients admitted to the hospital from the ED for further medical treatment, representing the full continuum of a patient's care.
