Twenty healthcare facilities in the Greater Chicago area have been named Top Hospitals for Emergency Medicine by HealthGrades.
The findings were based on the HealthGrades Emergency Medicine in American Hospitals report, which analyzed more than 7 million Medicare patient records from 2008 to 2010 and recognized 263 hospitals nationwide.

The HealthGrades report analyzed patients admitted to the hospital through the ED for bowel obstruction, COPD, diabetic acidosis and coma, gastrointestinal bleeding, heart attack, heart failure, pancreatitis, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, respiratory failure, sepsis and stroke. The HealthGrades report included only patients admitted to the hospital from the ED for further medical treatment, representing the full continuum of a patient's care.
