Five Greater Chicago hospitals were among 33 facilities in six states to win recognition from the American Society for Healthcare Engineering of the American Hospital Association for cutting their energy consumption more than 10% over a 12-month period.

Advocate Trinity Hospital in Chicago earned the honor by reducing energy consumption by 20%, while there were 15% reductions at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge and Advocate Illinois Masonic Hospital in Chicago. Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville and Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove each reduced energy consumption by 10%.

The recognition from ASHE is part of the Society’s Energy Efficiency Commitment program, which encourages hospitals across the country to reduce their energy consumption by 10 percent or more in support of the goals of the Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR Challenge.

ASHE Executive Director Dale Woodin, CHFM, FASHE, said each of the award winners, "has demonstrated a significant commitment to energy efficiency over an extended period of time. This commitment directly translates into improvements in their facility operations and their environment. In addition, the resources that they saved can be returned to support the core mission of the organization, to provide outstanding care to patients."
