A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held March 29 to celebrate the grand opening of Houston Northwest Urgent Care Center, a free-standing facility that will serve the growing medical needs of the northwest Houston community.

"The new Houston Northwest Urgent Care Center brings the quality care offered at the hospital out into the community," said Houston Northwest Medical Center CEO Linda Mercier, RN, MSN, in a news release.

The urgent care center is staffed by physicians and specially trained nurses, and has on-site laboratory services and X-rays. It is equipped to handle a wide range of minor emergencies. Patients who require more advanced medical attention can be transferred quickly to Houston Northwest Medical Center.

In other news, Houston Northwest Medical Center offered free EZ-Detect colon cancer kits during March to mark National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. The EZ-Detect kit is simple, sanitary and can be done at home. No lab processing or stool handling is necessary, and there are no dietary restrictions before or during the testing period. However, if a person receives a positive result, an easy-to-read results card can be completed and sent to his or her physician.

About 40,000 lives a year could be saved through widespread adoption of colorectal cancer screening and early treatment, according to a news release. Approximately 140,000 new cases of colorectal cancer will be diagnosed and 56,000 people will die from the disease this year, according to the release.
