The ICU and cardiothoracic ICU at Lankenau Medical Center, Wynnewood, Pa., have received American Association of Critical-Care Nurses’ 2012 silver-level Beacon awards.

This award was created to recognize individual nursing care units that distinguish themselves in the care of patients and their families, according to a news release.

The units recognized by this award demonstrate exceptional care through improved outcomes and overall satisfaction. Beacon Award winners are examples of supportive work environments.

"The silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence is a tribute to the exemplary staff on two of our ICUs who work together every day to optimize outcomes for patients and their families," Margaret Iacobacci, RN, MSN, vice president of patient care services, said in the release.

The silver-level award is based on the following criteria: leadership structures and systems; appropriate staffing and staff engagement; effective communications, knowledge management, learning and development and best practices; evidence-based practice and processes; and patient outcomes.
