I appreciated Nurse.com’s June 4 article “Guiding nurses into mental health” (Nurse.com/Article/MindGuidance) because several of my nursing instructors recognized and fostered my strong suit — psych — even before I did.
My first nursing job after graduation was as a charge nurse in an intermediate, geriatric/psychiatric facility.
There never was a dull moment as I discovered my patients had been pilots, concert pianists, actors, laborers, administrators, healthcare workers, etc. Nurses who choose psych have an unflagging interest in human behavior, but all nurses deal with patients who have myriad physical, mental and behavioral issues. Psych is fundamental to all patient care.
