I read “A model approach” (Nurse.com/Article/Wellness) in the June 18 issue with interest. I always have felt that as nurses, we need to be role models for our patients.

It’s something that needs a lot of work. I had a classmate in nursing school whose hair always smelled as if it hadn’t been washed in too long. I’ve never understood why nurses, or doctors, or respiratory therapists for that matter, smoked. I’ve also noted obesity among too many colleagues. Too many of us eat all the wrong foods.

Why anyone in his or her right mind would eat what’s called the “typical Western diet” is beyond me. It’s true that significant exercise takes planning, but eating a nutritious diet instead of fast food takes very little, and it’s not rocket science.
