Eight hospitals in the New York region were named in July to the nation’s Most Wired hospitals list.

The annual Most Wired survey, conducted annually and released in the July issue of Hospitals & Health Networks magazine, the journal of the American Hospital Association, recognizes healthcare organizations for IT achievements in infrastructure, business and administrative management, clinical quality and safety and the care continuum. The survey also included questions based on concepts of meaningful use.

The 2012 Most Wired honorees included Continuum Health Partners, New York City; Maimonides Medical Center, Brooklyn; Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York City; Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx; Stony Brook (N.Y.) University Medical Center; and Winthrop-University Hospital, Mineola, N.Y.

Southampton (N.Y.) Hospital was selected for the Most Wired’s Small and Rural list, while NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, New York City, was honored as among the Most Improved facilities.

Among the survey’s findings were that 100% of Most Wired hospitals check drug interactions and drug allergies when medications are ordered as a major step in reducing medication errors, and 93% of Most Wired hospitals employ intrusion-detection systems to protect patient privacy and the security of patient data compared with 77% of the total responders. Nearly one-half of Most Wired hospitals use social media for community outreach and crisis communication compared with one-third of total respondents.

"As shown by these survey results, hospitals continue to demonstrate how IT not only is used to improve patient care and safety but also is a means to improve efficiency," Rich Umbdenstock, president and CEO of the AHA, said in a news release.

The survey asked hospitals and health systems across the U.S. to answer questions regarding IT initiatives. Respondents completed 662 surveys, representing 1,570 hospitals, or roughly 27% of all U.S. hospitals.
