Stephanie San Felice, RN, an ICU nurse at Verde Valley Medical Center in Cottonwood, Ariz., was named the Arizona March of Dimes Distinguished Nurse of the Year. The award is given to a nurse who demonstrates leadership and expertise throughout his or her career in patient care, community service and advocacy.

San Felice said she saw the need for a program in the ICU that offered support and resources to family members before, during and after the death of a loved one. She was a leading force behind the implementation of a bereavement program that offers support, hope and guidance to help families begin the process of healing. The program is an outlet for grief and closure for families and loved ones, as well as staff involved in the care of dying patients.

"I knew since I was a little girl that I wanted to be a nurse," San Felice said in a news release. "Being a nurse gives me so many opportunities to make a difference in the lives of others, which ultimately continues to positively impact my life and the life of my family. Being recognized for helping others is an honor, but it is really about the patients and families we care for. I am thankful to be part of their lives."

San Felice was nominated by her peers for the award and is the first nurse at Verde Valley to receive it. San Felice and other Arizona nurses were honored at the 9th annual Arizona March of Dimes Nurse of the Year Gala in Phoenix.
