The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International has announced results of a program to build nurse faculty leadership skills.
To address junior faculty attrition rates, STTI partnered with The Elsevier Foundation in 2009 to create the Nurse Faculty Mentored Leadership Development pilot program. The primary objectives of the program were to effectively transition new nurse educators into the faculty role and develop leadership knowledge that would improve retention.
The 18-month pilot program included 15 nurse faculty participants who had been in their positions for fewer than five years. STTI recently compiled a summary report demonstrating the scholars have become true change agents. At the completion of the NFMLD experience, 100% of the participating scholars reported that they accomplished their stated goals and objectives. Among these, scholars said they developed new leadership and team-building behaviors and skills; expanded their professional network; increased their scope of influence; and successfully developed a career development plan.
Tony Forrester, RN, PhD, ANEF, an NFLMD faculty advisor, said the 15 nurse faculty scholars "produced many remarkable outcomes." The scholars assumed 39 new leadership roles in their educational institutions, professional associations and communities. Four scholars accepted new leadership positions or were promoted. The group produced 45 scholarly papers, posters and studies for presentation at professional conferences.
"When we first developed this program with STTI, we insisted on one criterion: The results had to be lasting," Tom Reller, vice president of global corporate relations at Elsevier, said in a news release. "I’m glad to say the results show this first cohort demonstrated true leadership and that they are ready to mentor new nurse faculty in the future."
Given the positive outcomes of the pilot program, the program has been expanded into a full-fledged STTI leadership development academy. With support from the Elsevier Foundation, the Nurse Faculty Leadership Academy 2011-2013 academy is under way and will conclude at STTI’s biennial convention November 2013 in Indianapolis.
