In 2013, Nurse.com will celebrate 25 years of being a part of the professional lives of nurses around the country. Once two companies — Nursing Spectrum in the East and NurseWeek in the West — we’ve evolved into Nurse.com and grown to be the leading source of nursing jobs, news, career events and continuing education.

I’ve been privileged to be part of the company for more than half of its existence and am proud that recognition of nursing excellence has remained an essential part of our work. Our excellence program has allowed us to honor nursing’s best, whether they come from the frontlines of patient care or the helm of its management, from healthcare facilities or education settings. The nomination stories we receive each year are nothing short of amazing.

Next year, we’ll celebrate nursing excellence in a special way. I know silver is the traditional 25th anniversary gift, but we’ll be celebrating with GEMs.

The Giving Excellence Meaning award is akin to The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Oscar, the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League’s Tony and The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ Emmy. Our goal has always been to give real meaning to nursing excellence, and the GEM award will be a symbol of that.

Our excellence program and the galas we host aren’t the only thing we’ve spruced up over the past quarter century. We’ve strengthened our connection with nurses by continually improving our editorial content, enhancing our website and adding new education offerings. We’ve increased the number of job postings available to you, created interactive ways to update resumes and provided experts to give career and legal advice. We’ve been out in the community with you at facilities, organization meetings, trade shows and conferences and supported and worked with you as colleagues, teachers, learners, hosts and participants. And we’ve loved every minute of it!

The year 2013 promises to be special for Nurse.com, and we want you to be part of it. Start now by nominating a nurse colleague for one of our first GEM Awards. Nominations are open in the East and will open next month in the West. Details can be found online at nurse.com/nursingexcellence and in our magazines. Don’t miss out! Our 25th year at Nurse.com is going to be a GEM of an anniversary!
