Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallasí Marina Reeves, RNC-LRN, BSN, presented at the eighth biennial Joanna Briggs International Colloquium conference in Chiang Mai, Thailand, held Nov. 12-14. The event, "Channeling the Rivers of Knowledge to Improve Global Policy and Practice," brought together nursing experts and policymakers from around the world with the common goal of improving healthcare through evidence-based practices. Keynote speakers included Korn Chatikavanij, former finance minister of Thailand, and Karin Hannes, PhD, from the Cochrane Qualitative Review Methods Group of Belgium.

Reeves presented findings from her project, which moved newborn baby care evaluations traditionally delivered in the nursery — such as baby weight, baths and lab draws — into the motherís room. The project was part of her work for Texas Christian Universityís Evidence Based Practice Fellowship program.

"Our newborn nursery team is committed to creating strong mother-baby connections from birth," Reeves said in a news release. "By performing these newborn assessments at the bedside, mothers do not miss vital information about their baby. They can feel comfortable knowing their baby is within reach, which also helps with successful breast-feeding and mother-baby bonding."

Reeves and her colleagues increased the number of newborn evaluations performed in mothersí rooms from 10% to 66%, which improved maternal confidence and baby bonding, but also had a positive impact on patient satisfaction scores, according to the release.

Reeves also is a Magnet champion for the newborn nursery unit and an active member of the hospitalís research and outreach committees and North Texas Association of Neonatal Nurses.
