In the aftermath of the Newtown, Conn., shooting massacre, more than 30 nursing organizations joined the American Nurses Association in sending a call to action to President Barack Obama and leaders of Congress, the National Governors Association and the United States Conference of Mayors.

"The nationís nurses demand that political and community leaders across this country address long-standing societal needs to help curb this endless cycle of senseless violence," the organizations wrote.

The groups noted that during the past decade, "ill-advised and shortsighted cutbacks within schools and community health systems have seriously impeded critical and needed access to school nurses and mental health professionals trained to recognize and intervene early with those who are at risk for violent behavior."

The groups urged swift action to avert more such acts of violence. In the statement, they called on policymakers to restore access to mental health services for individuals and families, increase studentsí access to nurses and mental health professionals from the elementary school level through college, and ban assault weapons and enact other meaningful gun control reforms to protect society.

Among the groups signing the letter were the ANA and more than 20 state nursing organizations, the American Academy of Nursing, American Psychiatric Nursing Association, Association of Nurses in AIDS Care, Association of Womenís Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses, Infusion Nurses Society, National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists, National Association of Orthopedic Nurses, National Association of School Nurses, National League for Nursing, Nurses Organization of Veteran Affairs, Preventive Cardiovascular Nurses Association and Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society.
