Nurses will be honored and receive worldwide recognition Jan. 1 with a float in the 124th Rose Parade.

The nursesí float, themed "A Healing Place," was built entirely with funds raised by the nonprofit group Bare Root, Inc., which was started by five nurses in Southern California in 2007 when they learned that Sally Bixby, RN, would be this yearís president of the Tournament of Roses. Bixby is the first nurse and second woman to be named to the top role.

The group seized the opportunity to honor nurses worldwide. "Nurses create a healing place with their presence, anywhere and under any circumstance," Monica Weisbrich, RN, president of Bare Root, Inc., said in a news release.

The qualities of nurses and characteristics of nursing are reflected in the design of the float and the words inscribed on the base: caring, commitment, compassion, confidence, conscientiousness and intelligence. Nurses bring these qualities to create "a healing place," according to the news release. Nurse.com is among the sponsors of the float.

Bare Root has announced the 10 riders, representing diverse backgrounds and disciplines, who will have the opportunity to ride on the float:

Suko Davies, RN; ED, Huntington Hospital, Pasadena, Calif.

Cherie Fox, RN, BSN CCRN-CSC; CICU, Mission Hospital, Mission Viejo, Calif. (part of St. Joseph Health).

Deborah Keasler, RN, MS; director, cardiac services, Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, Pomona, Calif.

Sister Terrence Landini, LCM; retired nurse leader, Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center, Torrance, Calif.

Maureen Latham, RN; Sharp Mary Birch Hospital For Women & Newborns, San Diego (part of Sharp HealthCare).

Bob Patterson, RN, MSN; American Assembly for Men in Nursing.

Patti Taylor, RN, MN, CNS, FNP; clinical nurse specialist, Liver Transplant Unit, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles (representing Nurse.com).

Cathy Rodgers Ward, RN, DNSc, NEA-BC, director of nursing, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles, (representing Nurse.com).

Ariel Eby, nursing student, Pasadena City College.

Nicole Brown, nursing student, Pasadena City College.

"Our riders were selected because they are all highly respected individuals within their respective institutions and epitomize excellence for the profession," Weisbrich said. "They provide an opportunity to recognize the immense contributions that all nurses make regardless of where they provide patient care."

The 2013 Rose Parade theme is "Oh, the Places Youíll Go," inspired by the Dr. Seuss book. "It is meant to encourage all to reach higher than the highest star and to create and explore a world that is full of possibility, rich with imagination and bursting with discovery," Bixby said.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the country will need more than a half a million RNs by 2018. "Our riders represent the current excellence in our field and the future of the profession, and it provides a small look into the vast opportunities that nursing offers," Weisbrich said.
