Four nurses from Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals in Philadelphia were honored in the 2012 New York Times Tribute to Nurses awards competition.

Debbie Gardiner, RN, MSN, was selected as the winner in the research category. Joining her were category finalists Rania Abdelaziz Fahmy, RN-BC, BSN, CMSRN, in the community service category; Chris Choyce, RN-C, BSN, in the innovation category; and Rich Webster, RN, MSN, NEA-BC, in the leadership category.

The annual competition is open to nurses who practice in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. On Dec. 10, the nurses were recognized at the Tribute to Nurses Awards Breakfast in New York.

Gardiner also was recognized in October at the 2012 Nightingale Awards of Pennsylvania gala as the winner in the program’s advanced practice RN category. The Nightingale Awards of Pennsylvania is a volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to the support and recognition of the positive impact of nursing in healthcare.

As the clinical nurse specialist on the trauma unit, Gardiner is a novice nurse researcher, particularly with a project related to preventing deep vein thrombosis, according to a news release.

Fahmy, a med/surg staff nurse, was honored for her service to the community and selfless efforts on behalf of Jefferson patients. A staff nurse and clinical charge nurse in the NICU, Choyce led the initiative to implement the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses at Jefferson. Jefferson’s new chief operating officer, Webster, was recognized for his leadership ability and clinical and administrative expertise.
