Laura Santoro, RN, of Alden Estates of Orland Park (Ill.) Rehabilitation and Health Care Center was named the 2012 Nurse of the Year by the Illinois Health Care Association and the Long Term Care Nurses Association. The award was presented at the Ovations breakfast during IHCA’s 62nd Annual Convention and Trade Show in September in Peoria, Ill.

According to a news release, Santoro, with more than two decades of experience in long-term care, is dedicated and caring, consistently going above and beyond what is expected of her. Award recipients are nominated by their peers

"She is constantly doing rounds," facility administrator Katie Maniatis said in the release.

"It is a rare moment that she is seated anywhere while here at work. Our protocol is to check on residents every two hours at a minimum. She tends to check on her residents every 15 minutes."

According to the release, one resident’s family member said they were fortunate to have Santoro caring for their mother, calling the nurse "a very special, caring person who understood the anxiety and helplessness my mom was feeling.

"Always with a smile and positive comments, Laura made my family feel more comfortable and trusting that Mom was in a place where she would be safe and well taken care of."
