Calvert Memorial nurse receives Outstanding Nurse Educator Award

Rose Essex, RN, certified diabetes educator at Calvert Memorial Hospital in Prince Frederick, Md., recently received the 2012 Outstanding Nurse Educator Award from the Maryland Nurses Association.

The award is presented to an MNA member who has demonstrated excellence in nursing education, continuing education for patients and providing others with exceptional educational opportunities, according to a news release.

Essex has worked in the healthcare industry for 40 years. For the past 11 years, she has served as a diabetes educator at Calvert Memorial Hospital, evaluating and assessing diabetic patients and teaching them self-management skills. She has been instrumental in developing a comprehensive diabetes education program for Calvert, according to the release.

During National Nurses Week, Essex was awarded the 2012 Grace E. Brown Educator Award for the Maryland Nurses Associationís District 9, which includes Calvert, Charles and St. Maryís counties. The award recognizes outstanding clinical competence, compassionate care, active membership in health-related organizations and participation in continuing education programs, according to the release. Essex also had been named Nurse of the Year by District 9 in 2006.
