Sun Kim, RN, a staff nurse on the headache unit at Methodist Hospital in Philadelphia, was honored Dec. 21 with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

According to a news release, Kim was nominated by a co-worker who witnessed the compassion and comfort Kim provided to a young patient.

"Sun is an exceptional nurse and always shows compassion toward her patients, their families and others," the nominator wrote. "One day, Sun was caring for a young woman who was having a difficult time struggling to get through the day. Sun spent the morning with the patient and learned that recently she had buried her premature infant who had died due to complications. It was now the second month anniversary of the babyís death and she was distraught.

"Sun spent considerable time consoling and talking with the patient. At one point, she asked me cover her other patients since there was something she had to do for this patient. My co-workers and I watched as Sun returned to the patientís room with a stuffed animal and flowers she had purchased from the gift shop. She placed the flowers on the bedside table, placed the stuffed animal under the patientís arm and gave her a big hug. ... That day, Sun not only touched the heart of the patient, but touched the heart of her co-workers as well."
