CINJ earns national recognition for supporting its nursing team

The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, New Brunswick, has been named the recipient of the 2013 Oncology Nursing Society’s Employer Recognition Award in the medium-size employer category.

The honor — to be formally presented at the ONS’ 38th Annual Congress April 25-28 in Washington, D.C. — acknowledges institutions that support the vision, mission and values of the nursing organization.

“Our team is dedicated to excellence and is able to provide that distinct level of service in part thanks to the support and commitment of The Cancer Institute of New Jersey,” Director of Oncology Nursing Services Janet Gordils-Perez, RN, MA, APN-BC, AOCNP, said in a news release. “Our center’s leadership recognizes the value and expertise of the resources and training opportunities offered through ONS, and because of this support, our nurses continue to excel in delivering quality programs and care, which ultimately translate into improved outcomes both for our patients and the community at large.”

The Cancer Institute of New Jersey is affiliated with The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

“As a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, The Cancer Institute of New Jersey is dedicated to research, treatment, prevention and education,” Robert S. DiPaola, MD, director of CINJ and associate dean for oncology programs at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, said in a news release.

Core tenets upheld by the ONS include leading the transformation of cancer care, promoting excellence in oncology nursing and fostering integrity, stewardship, advocacy, excellence and inclusiveness.

“From being on the front lines of patient care to helping drive clinical discoveries and beyond, our oncology nurses play a critical role in upholding each one of those pillars every day, and we are proud to support them,” DiPaola said in the release.

“The principles put forth by the Oncology Nursing Society represent the very heart of the oncology nursing profession. We are pleased that our nurses incorporate these values into their work, and we are equally pleased to be recognized by an organization that places great emphasis on oncology nursing excellence.”

The three categories of Employer Recognition Awards (small, medium and large) were developed to recognize employers that show exemplary support for their registered oncology nurses who reinforce the ONS’ principles.

Along with receiving the Employer Recognition Award, a main highlight of the annual meeting is the research that will be presented during the four-day event. Several nurses from The Cancer Institute of New Jersey will present posters and abstracts that highlight their investigation into oral treatment adherence and fatigue and sleep disturbances as they relate to care and quality of life for cancer patients.
