Each month, Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster, Md., recognizes the achievements of members of the Carroll Hospital Center staff with a program called Associate WOW Service Awards. From those who are nominated to receive Associate WOW Service Awards each month, one Associate of the Month is chosen. And, from a yearís worth of Associate of the Month winners, one Associate of the Year is selected.

Colleen Hordesky, RN, was selected as the May Associate of the Month. A member of the staff for close to 10 years, Hordesky was nominated for her extraordinary care of a critically ill patient in the ED, according to a news release.

"Colleen maintained the perfect level of professionalism and empathy when it was needed most," Norma Austin, RN, BSN, CEN, CPEN, executive director of emergency services, said in the release. "She is a shining example of an associate living out each and every one of our hospitalís SPIRIT values."

Eugenie "Genie" Ladic, RN, with the intermediate care unit, was selected as the June Associate of the Month. An employee for eight years, Ladic was nominated for going above and beyond her normal duties to help a patient communicate with her boyfriend in England during her hospital stay, according to the release.

"We are so fortunate to have Genie as one of our nurses who are dedicated to providing such great care to our patients," Colleen Duerr, RN, BSN, clinical manager of the intermediate care unit, said in the release. "She genuinely cares for all of her patients and is abundantly compassionate and kind, which makes patients feel reassured they are in the best hands."
