As part of its overall mission to support the health needs of the community, the Oregon Center for Nursing recently formed the Nursing Equity Coalition and plans to expand its membership to include practicing nurses and non-nurses.
The coalition’s focus is on creating a more inclusive healthcare workforce and helping nurses improve their care for a variety of populations, according to the OCN.
“We are now also seeking to expand membership and include nurses in practice and non-nurses who are committed to equity and combating health disparities,” said Anastasia Sofranac, program manager at OCN. To become a volunteer member of the coalition, contact Sofranac at sofranac@up.edu.
The group, once composed mostly of nurse educators now includes recruiters, nursing students, mentors and other health advocates. It meets every other month at the OCN in Portland to share information and produce projects relevant to practicing and student nurses.
Originally formed in 2005 as the Nursing Workforce Diversity Steering Committee, with the sole charge of disseminating grant funds around diversifying the state’s nursing workforce, the coalition is also tasked with creating equitable and patient-centered care and advocating for and monitoring legislation on cultural competency.
“The Nursing Workforce Diversity Steering Committee focused mostly on increasing overall diversity in schools and workplaces,” said Sofranac.
Sofranac said the coalition serves as an excellent opportunity for nurses to be involved in finding solutions to health disparities and underrepresentation of minority groups in the nursing profession.
“We want to make sure people from all demographics have the opportunity to become nurses and for all nurses [to] provide quality care to all people,” she said.
