Group Health in Seattle recently announced it has named Barbara Trehearne, RN, PhD, as vice president of primary care.

Trehearne, a respected leader in nursing education and clinical practice, has filled this position on an interim basis since April 2013. Trehearne is also Group Health’s vice president for clinical excellence, nursing and quality.

In partnership with Claire Trescott, MD, medical director of primary care at Group Health, Trehearne will continue to implement updates to Group Health’s medical home, according to a news release. They also will provide continuity within primary care services as it prepares for the changes necessitated by healthcare reform, the release said.

Trehearne has been instrumental in the development and design of multiple education programs for nurses, including a baccalaureate completion program for Group Health RNs, in partnership with Seattle Pacific University. She is also an associate dean of clinical practice at the University of Washington School of Nursing and an adjunct faculty member at Seattle Pacific University.

She is a past chair and a current member of the Washington Center for Nursing’s board of directors, and a fellow in the Western Academy of Nursing and the Center for Nursing Leadership. She has many honors throughout her distinguished career, including the Distinguished Career award from the Northwest Organization of Nursing Executives; the Mountain West Region Nurse.com Nursing Excellence Award for Advancing and Leading the Profession; and Outstanding Health Care Executive from Seattle Business magazine. She also serves on the board of directors for the Group Health Foundation.
