Two California nurses were among the recipients of the Annual Writer’s Awards at the 2013 Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses Annual Convention in Nashville, Tenn., in September.

Laura Wagner, RN, PhD, GNP, FAAN, an assistant professor at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Nursing, was part of a team of five authors who received the Research for Practice Writer’s Award for their article “Patient Safety in Medical-Surgical Units: Can Nurse Certification Make a Difference?” Published in the January/February issue of MedSurg Nursing, the article studied how nursing-sensitive outcomes in hospitalized older adults may be influenced by nurse certification.

Nancy Warren

Nancy Warren, RN, MSN, patient care manager at Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa, received the First-Time Author Writer’s Award for her article, “Involving Patient and Family Advisors in the Patient and Family-Centered Care Model.” Published in MedSurg Nursing’s July/August 2012 issue, Warren explained how patient and family advisors can be strong allies in ongoing performance improvement efforts.
