The Silver Cross Foundation in New Lenox, Ill., awarded $24,000 in scholarships to 13 Silver Cross Hospital employees and two scholarships to children of Silver Cross employees to help further their education.

The Will-Grundy County Medical Society recently donated more than $8,500 to the Doris Hubbs Nursing Alumnae Scholarship fund at Silver Cross Hospital, which provided additional scholarships to advance the hospital’s nursing education program. This scholarship was created in 2003 by the Silver Cross Nursing Alumnae Association to commemorate its centennial anniversary and support individuals interested in a career in nursing. The scholarships are awarded annually to Silver Cross employees accepted to or enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate registered nursing program or nursing certificate program.

Michelle Weteska, RN, and Daniel Zelehovitis, RN, were the recipients of a $1,000 Donna and Jim Galligan Scholarship.

Christine Beach and Kiely Witte, LPN, were the recipients of a $500 Frances M. Thomas Nursing Scholarship. The scholarship is named for former Silver Cross Emergency Department RN Frances Thomas and is awarded to assist with tuition and expenses. Jane Pomranky, RN, is the 2013 recipient of the $1,000 Keyton H. Nixon Scholarship. Named after former Silver Cross President Keyton Nixon, the scholarship is awarded annually to a Silver Cross employee who is pursuing graduate studies in healthcare.
