Two members of the Emergency Care Center at Oak Hill Hospital, Brooksville, Fla., were honored as the Star Associates of the Year for 2013, according to a news release.

Jeff Palmer, RN, a firefighter-paramedic, began his career at Oak Hill Hospital in May 2011. He is an RN in the Emergency Care Center where he handles community emergencies from minor flu-like symptoms to major heart attacks.

Paramedic Thomas Ratcliffe joined Oak Hill Hospital in November 2011 in the Emergency Care Center.

Both men were commended for their conduct in helping the occupants of crashed vehicles in the middle of an intersection. While helping at the crash scene, another vehicle collided with the wreckers in the intersection.

They barely escaped serious injury. Palmer, visibly injured, jumped back up and made his way to the person in the first vehicle while Ratcliffe ran toward the median where the second vehicle had hit more cars and flipped.

Each month at Oak Hill associates are chosen in a process that involves nominations and voting by their peers, patients, patient families and physicians, with a Star Associate of the Year named at yearís end.
