Debra Cohen, RN, BSN, MS, NE-BC, has been honored by Holy Cross Hospital, Fort Lauderdale, Fla, as its 2013 Leader of the Year for her role as the executive director of nursing for the hospital’s medical/surgical, telemetry, orthopedics, intensive rehabilitation and palliative care departments.

“A collaborative, servant-leader, Debra is approachable, positive, calm, intelligent and creative,” Holy Cross Hospital President and CEO Patrick A. Taylor, MD, said in a news release. “Dedicated and passionate about her profession and role at Holy Cross, Debra has a keen business acumen and high level of intuitiveness that influences others and creates positive change at the hospital.”

Overseeing 320 employees, Cohen serves as a key member of the hospital’s nursing leadership team. She played a critical role in the hospital’s process to earn Magnet certification and was integral during the hospital’s implementation of iCare, a data management and electronic health records system.

“This award is truly a team award,” Cohen said. “I wouldn’t be able to perform my daily duties without the talented staff I have working alongside me and all of the accomplishments I have achieved are a direct result of our teamwork.”

She received her master’s degree in business leadership from National Louis University, Evanston, Ill., and her BSN from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
