Meet the 2014 Greater Chicago Nurse.com Rising Star Award winner

This year, Nurse.com will present a new Rising Star Award at each GEM Award event to an RN who has been working in a professional nursing setting for five years or less. The winner will have demonstrated strong nursing knowledge and clinical leadership skills and exceeded role expectations in patient care and professional endeavors.

This year's winner in the Greater Chicago region is Jennifer Mahon, RN, BSN, a staff nurse in oncology at University of Chicago Medicine.

A calm and confident emerging leader who now serves on her unitís staff responsiveness committee, Mahon handles pressure well on a busy oncology unit.

She began taking on the charge nurse role within her first year of practice, and she is always willing to precept new nurses on the unit. Mahon also takes an active role in discussing with leadership how to improve patient outcomes and she takes part in projects to improve patient care. Mahon listens to issues that fellow nurses bring to the table, approaches the problems professionally and offers sensible solutions.

She participates in panel discussions consisting of former nurse residents and management on lateral violence. During these sessions, Mahon shows that she is a model nurse on how to resolve conflicts calmly, as well as how to escalate an issue when the situation warrants. Her actions and contributions regarding lateral violence have contributed to the increased awareness of it in the organization and led to effective discussions by leadership on how to address this issue.

Mahon was the lead person in her nurse residency groupís evidence-based project on developing a mucositis tool for oncology patients. The project was selected as a poster presentation by the University Health System Consortium at its March 2013 national conference.
