The pertussis continuing education article in the March 24 edition (www.CE.Nurse.com/Course/CE707/Pertussis) clearly explained the importance of vaccination against this preventable disease. I was pleased to see the author included the importance of family vaccination in the protection of newborns.

Our hospital offers the Tdap vaccination to postpartum mothers who need a booster vaccine, as well as family, caregivers, etc. Most of them believe that vaccinations received during childhood are still protective. For many, the education that nurses provide is the first discussion regarding pertussis prevention.
