Question:

Dear Donna,

I want to work from home full time. I am an active RN with four years of experience, all in the ED. I also am attending a university and expect to graduate with an MBA in the fall of 2015. I live in Central Illinois, which is not near any metropolitan areas. What are
my options?

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Wants to Work From Home,

You have many options depending on your interests. In many cases, you do not need to be geographically close to your employer so where you live might have no bearing on your employment.

I suggest you search for “telephonic case management” companies and positions or “telemedicine” companies as you search for employment. At the latter, nurses do telephone advice, telephone triage, case management, disease management and other types of telephonic work usually from their own homes.

These types of positions also are available with some insurance companies. If you need to learn more about any of these specialties, use the search feature on the Nurse.com website to locate related articles and resources.

You also should contact some nursing agencies, those that have opportunities beyond the bedside. They occasionally get home-based positions, in which employees work for pharmaceutical companies or others. If you're more entrepreneurial, you could look into legal nurse consulting.

Be sure to use social media, such as LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook to get the word out about what you're looking for in a job and to connect with those either offering these positions or doing the same type of work. Networking is well known to be a very effective way to find job and get hired.

Best wishes,
Donna
