0

On Nov. 14, Alderman Billy Ocasio, 26th ward of Chicago, received the Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center’s CARES Award for his contributions to the Hispanic community.

Medical Center CEO Margaret McDermott presented the award, which is given to community leaders who demonstrate in their work the medical center’s Core Values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence, and Service.

“Over the years, Alderman Ocasio’s guidance to Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center has been invaluable in helping us to deliver the highest quality of care to our patients,” McDermott says in a news release. “His fight to bring affordable housing, access to healthcare, and quality education to all of Chicago’s residents has been an inspiration to us all. The residents of Chicago are lucky to have him as their advocate.”

Ocasio, a lifelong resident of Humboldt Park, has served Chicago’s 26th Ward for 14 years. As alderman, Ocasio fought for the construction of the new Ames School, helped bring a YMCA to the 26th ward, and worked for the construction of the Humboldt Park Public Library. Ocasio also led a $16 million rehab for Humboldt Park.
