Roaring Into Nursing Research

Franklin Square Hospital Center’s third annual research conference, “Shifting Gears: Fine Tuning Your Research Engine,” helped 130 bedside staff nurses learn the nuts and bolts of conducting nursing research.

The keynote address at the June 3 event featured Margaret L. McClure, RN, EdD, FAAN, a professor at New York University who is known for her work, “Magnet Hospitals: Attraction & Retention of Professional Nurses.” Her presentation focused on the importance of research at hospitals that achieve Magnet recognition, an honor Franklin Square, Baltimore, earned in 2008.

Joan Warren, RN-BC, PhD, NEA-BC, director of professional practice and research at Franklin Square, described how to write an Institutional Review Board proposal in “Assembling a Winning Proposal.” Warren used the theme of wound photography in assessing pressure ulcers. Priscilla Adler, MBA, CCRP, and Angelique Dorsey, JD, CHRC, MedStar Health Research Institute, discussed the mechanics of submitting a proposal to the IRB in a presentation emphasizing human rights protection in nursing research.

A multisite research study being conducted at Franklin Square and Georgetown University was showcased during a wound photography study panel discussion featuring Lauren Myers, RN, BSN, CWOCN; Dorothy Goodman, RN, BSN, CWOCN; Elizabeth Jesada, CRNP, MS, CWON; and Ruth Iliuta, RN, MS, CNS-BC, CWCN, COCN. They shared their personal story of implementing a research study as novice researchers guided by their mentors.

Nancy Woods, RN, PhD, MPH, associate professor at Messiah College in Grantham, Pa., and adjunct faculty at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Nursing, walked the audience through how to critique an article, and Kathleen Buckley, RN, PhD, IBCLC, associate professor at the University of Maryland School of Nursing, offered tips on the best ways to disseminate finished research through poster, podium or manuscript publications.
