Dozens of friends, family members and colleagues took part in a reception recently to honor Patricia Gerrity, RN, PhD, associate dean for community programs, Drexel University College of Nursing and Health Professions, as Nursing Spectrums 2010 National Nurse of the Year in Advancing & Leading the Profession.
Gerrity, who appeared on the cover of the Nov. 8, 2010 edition, was presented with the award and a bouquet of roses from Nursing Spectrums Donna Novak, RN, director, nursing communications & initiatives, and Fred J. DiCostanzo, RN, executive vice president, human resources, at 11th Street Family Health Services in Philadelphia.
Among the attendees were Gloria Donnelly, RN, PhD, FAAN, dean of Drexels College of Nursing and Health Professions, and Roberta Waite, RN, MSN, EdD, associate professor and assistant dean, who nominated Gerrity for the award.
Novak lauded Gerrity for her commitment to improving health outcomes for urban populations and her leadership role in developing 11th Street Family Health Services and serving as its director.
Gerrity won the regional Nursing Excellence Award for Advancing and Leading the Profession in May, and was chosen among regional winners from across the country to be the national winner in her category of excellence in October.
