Nursing Students, Faculty Meet Maryland Legislators

Students, staff and faculty members from two local nursing schools were among the participants Feb. 21 in an annual visit to the Maryland legislature to meet with state legislators and discuss nursing topics.

The event, sponsored by the Maryland Nurses Association, offers an opportunity for nurses, students and faculty to witness the legislative process and discuss issues related to healthcare with their elected delegates.

About 50 University of Maryland School of Nursing representatives traveled to Annapolis to meet with legislators and encourage them to support funding for loan assistance repayment programs.

The UMSON representatives also urged lawmakers to continue to support the governor’s budget request for the University of Maryland, Baltimore. The Maryland delegation reminded legislators that UMSON provides more than 40% of Maryland’s professional nurse workforce and contributes healthcare services for underserved communities valued at $5 million annually.

Lawmakers also discussed the role of nurse practitioners with UMSON representatives and how NPs want to collaborate with other healthcare professionals to meet the state’s growing healthcare needs.

Joining more thatn 200 nurses from across the state was a group from the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing.

“Healthcare is a hot topic at the local, state, and federal levels and nursing is significantly impacted by healthcare reform,” said JHUSON instructor and MNA immediate past president Rosemary Mortimer, RN, MS, MSEd, CCBE. “It’s important for our students to see how the legislative process works, and how crucial nursing legislation really is.”

Mortimer and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Pamela Jeffries, RN, DNS, FAAN, ANEF, teach an online politics course to students from the Traditional 2011 and 2012 classes, Accelerated 2011 class, and the RN to BS program.
