Former Loyola nurse leader Otto Simon dies at 74


Otto Simon, who served as Loyola University Medical Center’s director of nursing for nearly two decades, died June 2 in Madison, Wis., after a brief illness. He was 74.

Simon was known for his ability to train, mentor and support young nursing professionals to further their education and careers, with many becoming nurse leaders.

Simon was a graduate of Cook Country Diploma School of Nursing and received his BSN from Marquette University in Milwaukee and an MSN from DePaul University, Chicago.

Funeral services were June 15 in Elkhorn, Wis., and a private family burial was conducted in St. Paul, Minn., where Simon grew up.

Simon’s family, according to Loyola University Health System, has asked gifts in his memory be sent to the Loyola University Chicago Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing, 2160 S. First Ave., Maywood, IL 60153.

A nursing scholarship fund will be established in Simon’s memory.
