Mercy Medical Center RNs participate in ‘Preemie For a Day’ workshop

Nurses at Baltimore’s Mercy Medical Center got the opportunity to play the role of their smallest patients during a June 28-29 workshop.

Led by a team of clinically active professionals with a variety of NICU backgrounds, RNs took part in the Preemie For a Day training at the medical center’s Weinberg Center.

The interactive, multisensory workshop allowed RNs to experience an infant’s journey from birth through admission, and the chance to practice developmentally supportive care throughout an infant’s stay.

With a healthcare professional playing the role of the preemie, participants learned how to use positioning and handling techniques to promote flexion and self-soothing, foster developmentally supportive care during admissions, introduce feeding strategies that promote successful feedings and facilitate family and professional collaboration in the NICU.

The nurses also received feedback on the care they provided and took part in classroom learning sessions.
