Nurse creates tool to help reduce patient transfer time

0

Concerned by how long it can take to transfer patients to appropriate receiving facilities, Flagstaff, Ariz., nurse Ryan Heck, RN, CEN, CFRN, developed an online tool that allows a referring hospital or clinic to concurrently notify multiple transport services and hospitals when they need to transfer a patient. AdmitBed.com, which will launch early this year, aims to shorten the time it takes to secure both patient transportation and a go-ahead from a receptive hospital.

Heck said reducing this time is especially important for Arizona patients who may need transport over long distances, as even helicopter transport can exceed an hour. He cited a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, which revealed inefficiencies in patient transfers cause an increase in overall patient mortality. “Arizona nurses are the front line in facilitating efficient patient transfers,” Heck said. “By recognizing the need and embracing new technology, nurses can have a direct impact on positive patient outcomes.”

Trials using AdmitBed are under way in northern Arizona hospitals, Heck said. After a clinician uses AdmitBed to select potential patient destinations, the system sends emails and SMS text messages to notify those hospitals of the transfer need. The clinician includes required patient medical information that receiving team members can access online or by mobile device.
