Casey Shillam, RN-BC, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis in Sacramento, Calif., was appointed to the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing faculty on May 29. Before her work at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing, Shillam was an assistant professor at the University of Portland (Ore.) School of Nursing and worked in chronic-care management for assisted living facilities in Portland. While at UC Davis, Shillam was one of four leaders and the communications director for the California Action Coalition for the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action.
Carol Ann Attwood, RN-C, MLS, AHIP, MPH, of the Mayo Clinic in (Phoenix) Arizona, received the Presidents Above and Beyond award from the American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing. The award, presented at the AAACN annual conference in May, is given to an individual who exceeds the expectations of a volunteer role.
Susan Cogan, RN, MSN, PHN, in March published her 108-page book, “E-Mail from Kayenta.” The book chronicles her past experience working as a public health/school nurse on a Navajo reservation in Kayenta, Ariz. Cogan worked at a medical system in the San Francisco Bay area before working on the Navajo reservation where, she said, she faced many challenges.
Lorena Jaimes, RN, BSN, DNPc, has received a 2011-12 Purdue Pharma Pain Management award from the Nurse Practitioner Healthcare Foundation. She is one of five nurse practitioners who each received a $5,000 award to further education and research in pain management. Jaimes is an RN in the inpatient spinal cord injury unit at Veterans Affairs Health Care Center in Seattle. She is pursuing a DNP in acute care at the University of Washington, Seattle, and is studying rehab nurses knowledge of pain management for combat-related TBI to identify gaps and improve care.
KT Waxman, RN, DNP, MBA, CNL, CENP, was elected chairwoman of the DNP department at the University of San Francisco and began her new role this summer. She is responsible for the traditional DNP, executive leader DNP and DNP-FNP programs. Her book, “Finance and Business Skills for Doctor of Nursing Practice Students” comes out this fall, and she will be a keynote speaker in September at the SimHealth 2012 conference in Sydney, Australia.
